These patterns are experiencing rapid development and producing incredible chances for financiers. 5G Devices Our brand-new 5G (fifth-generation) wireless networks are a topic I've been covering for years now.
Despite the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic interfered with supply chains in 2015, an excellent 250 million 5G-enabled devices were still offered. Especially in the 2nd quarter, there were supply chain disturbances, making hold-ups, and work blockages. And all of this eventually resulted in Apple delaying the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by 2 months.
When you consider all of that, selling 250 million units is impressive. More significantly, the hold-ups caused by the pandemic created a ton of pent-up demand. Which demand is now going to be pressed into 2021. In fact, I predict that more than 500 million 5G devices will be shipped in 2021.
Stage 3 of 5G When I've discussed 5G in the past, I've described its three different stages. In Stage One, the facilities of these brand-new networks is developed out, including all the brand-new towers and fiber-optic circuitry that 5G will require. In Stage Two, 5G devices go on sale.
And in Stage 3, 5G services start to be offered. That's when we begin to see applications working on 5G networks. Think of things like massive multiplayer video games over a mobile phone. That's not possible with 4G. It will be with 5G. And my second 5G forecast for 2021 is that we will begin Stage Three by this summer season.
More and more consumers will go out to buy a 5G phone to gain access to these applications. 5G is going to open up a suite of incredible applications: self-driving automobiles, the Web of Things, robotic surgery, and more.
The investment opportunities moving forward will be massive. 3. CRISPR Genetic Editing Stepping away from 5G, the next important innovation I predict in 2021 is CRISPR hereditary modifying. CRISPR represents "clustered frequently interspaced brief palindromic repeat." It's a mouthful. However it is among the most amazing developments in biotechnology.
