These trends are experiencing rapid growth and producing extraordinary chances for investors. 5G Gadgets Our new 5G (fifth-generation) wireless networks are a topic I've been covering for years now.
Even though the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains in 2015, an excellent 250 million 5G-enabled devices were still sold. Especially in the second quarter, there were supply chain disturbances, manufacturing hold-ups, and work blockages. And all of this ultimately resulted in Apple postponing the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by 2 months.
And that demand is now going to be pushed into 2021. I forecast that more than 500 million 5G gadgets will be delivered in 2021.
Phase Three of 5G When I've discussed 5G in the past, I've described its 3 different phases. In Phase One, the facilities of these brand-new networks is built out, consisting of all the new towers and fiber-optic wiring that 5G will need. In Phase 2, 5G gadgets go on sale.
And in Stage 3, 5G services begin to be offered. That's when we start to see applications running on 5G networks. Think about things like massive multiplayer video games over a mobile phone. That's not possible with 4G. It will be with 5G. And my 2nd 5G forecast for 2021 is that we will begin Stage 3 by this summer.
But they will care if there are exciting applications that can just be accessed with a 5G phone. So a growing number of consumers will go out to buy a 5G phone to access these applications. That causes more 5G apps being established. In truth, 5G is going to open up a suite of amazing applications: self-driving cars and trucks, the Web of Things, robotic surgery, and more.
The investment opportunities going forward will be huge. CRISPR Genetic Editing Stepping away from 5G, the next essential technology I anticipate in 2021 is CRISPR hereditary modifying. It's one of the most interesting developments in biotechnology.
